There are fantastic graphics and the naval battles are especially dramatic but the game is not for thefainthearted and irrational AI dilpomacy and behaviour on the battlefield marrs the experience. If you can pick up a cheap copy as I did then the game is worth playing for the battles alone, but be prepared for some throughtly annoying bugs and an unchallenging AI.
It looks great on paper. It looks absolutely amazing on paper. Unfortunately this is a PC game, not one played on paper. There is an absolute It looks great on paper. There is an absolute deluge of bugs which range from rending the game unplayable to making it just not fun. Examples include save files becoming corrupted, the AI not having the ability to attack over the ocean, units gladly firing into their own lines, cannons going off whether you tell them to or not, numerous sound bugs, the list goes on.
To top it off most of the countries play just about the same, with the same units different names and not-unlockable minor nations. They also took out things like family trees. Aside from the terrible AI battles are pretty fun. The graphics are good and the underlying mechanics are good. I like how cities develop more in this one than in MW. Overall I'd wait a while before buying this. It's at least one major patch away from being any real fun at all, and likely an expansion away from realizing it's potential.

I loved the demo. I own all the other total war games, Unfortuneately, steam totally ruins this one. I have recieved multiple error messages I loved the demo. I have recieved multiple error messages from Steam while just trying to install such that I haven't even been able to play the game yet.
Steam's trouble shooting section on the web is very complex and lists hundreds of possible things that could be wrong. I had some difficulty with getting the demo to work and realized that I didn't want to buy the game via steam so I brought the box.
Unfortuneately, you need steam to install and probably also to play! Don't buy this game unless this steam issue is resolved. They sent me a acknowledgement email only so far. Them damn pirates What the hell, if you're an old timer and you don't care about flash over substance, there's plenty of substance to overcome the lack of flash.
I think it will be a cold day in hell before they remake this excellent but quirky game. If you love the time period you can't help but like the game. Get the DLC too. I got all of it. It's mostly elite units. Never seen any mods for it. In the game I'm currently playing as Britain we are at peace but I can't ally with them. France is a powerful country. I enjoy it a lot. Yes, there are bugs. For me, the most annoying is lag in siege battles when the wall is breached, especially on siege maps in India. Yes, there are mods. A lot of modding skill went into them and they tend to make a lot of changes which you might or might not like. Sadly, some download links for older mods no longer work. My suggestion is to play the unmodified game for a while, to see what you like and don't like about it. When you know what you'd like to be different, that could help you to choose a mod.

I think The Creative Assembly realised that the scope and scale of the Grand Campaign made it a little daunting for newcomers, so the game also features a more accessible campaign reminiscent of those introduced by the Medieval 2: Kingdoms expansion, following the growth of the US colonies towards settlement and independence. This starts off simple with the basics of the game and drip-feeds new concepts and game mechanics in as it goes on, taking you from your first towns through to your first conquests, diplomatic alliances, agents and onwards.
Bigger than the already colossal Medieval 2? Amazingly, yes. This means sea trade and piracy, plus the ability to exploit new trade theatres and prevent other nations from doing so.
More importantly, the naval action is heavy on atmosphere, capturing the same kind of nervous tension and noisy release that you might remember from Hornblower or Master and Commander. Otherwise, we get a host of tweaks and enhancements, ranging from a new relationship between agents and buildings now certain buildings effectively spawn certain types of agent to the new ability of some agents say, the rake to dispose of enemy agents say, the all-new Gentleman, who doubles as scholar and duellist.
Diplomacy is now a more complex business, as befits the period, and technological progress has a far greater impact on the buildings you can construct and the units you can manufacture. More plates to spin, in other words. Needless to say, the change of period also has a huge impact on the action on the battlefield. Infantry formations and cavalry charges still have a vital part to play, and siege warfare remains a key part of the overall picture, but the new dominance of the musket and artillery on the battlefield soon affects the whole way you play the game, making you much more careful about how you attack heavily defended positions, and making you think seriously about the way you deploy and control your musket-wielding units.
The AI is generally improved across the board, with enemies less likely to be sucked out of a strong position by obvious feints, and less oblivious to sudden assaults or outflanking manoeuvres than in previous games.
