What a shame! Because the basic premise is nothing short of breathtakingly original Perhaps one of the most original concepts to arrive on the screen in the past decade! I will admit that I am conflicted on this point. Perhaps the seeming pointlessness of Button's retro-existence is a bit of a metaphor for own lives, which, in the long term scheme of things, end up, do what we may, whether we like it or not, being hollow, devoid of purpose, simply inertia-driven and without any real merit or worthwhile impact.
In that sense, Fincher's film haunts me as almost no other film has. Visually, this film borders on miraculous. However, none of what you see is in-your-face. Every minute detail seems delicately integrated in a blissfully natural tapestry that is nothing short of inspired. On that note, let's look at Brad Pitt's performance in the title role.. Pitt's interpretation convincingly shows us a human being who has adapted to his unique condition and who has learned to take life one day at a time, virtually expectation free!
Kate Blanchett as Daisy is superb! The singularity of the nature of her relationship with Button allows her to take the audience into uncharted cinematic territory and, oh, what a delicate and sophisticated journey she takes us on! David Fincher's Benjamin Button surely is an ageless film for the ages! KissEnglishPasto Aug 2, FAQ Is it possible to read Fitzgerald's story online? Henson , a caretaker, and consequently raised as her own. While at the nursing home Benjamin meets six-year-old Daisy, whose grandmother is a patient in the home.
As the years pass, the viewer watches the lives of Daisy and Benjamin unfold as she progresses in age and he ages in reverse. While visiting the Garden District, Fincher became enamored with the 8,plus-square-foot white centerhall cottage at Coliseum Street.
Fincher imagined the house would serve as the retirement home in which Benjamin Button would grow up. But Fincher convinced Pitt to read the script with death in mind, and it made all the difference:.
I think you should read it with that in mind. Remember this guy grows up in an old folks home, literally everybody who passes though his life dies. So Pitt was convinced to star on the condition that he get to play the character through the entire film, and shortly thereafter Fincher signed Cate Blanchett to co-star. Then it came down to how, exactly, Fincher would age and de-age Pitt. The project was going to be so expensive that it was set up as a co-production between Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros.
The test was created to show how they would digitally replace the head of a body double with a CG, aged version of Brad Pitt. So Pitt moved on and Fincher went and made Zodiac , also at Paramount. In , Fincher and Co. So Roth set about reworking the script for a New Orleans setting. And then Hurricane Katrina hit.
The technological innovation used to complete this process and win an Oscar along the way was cutting edge at the time, and obviously unavailable to filmmakers in previous iterations of the project. Both inside and out. Adam Chitwood is the Managing Editor for Collider.
By reading the story, Caroline comes to learn the truth about who her father was. The movie ends with Benjamin finally dying as a baby in the flashbacks, and Daisy dying in the present day.
So what does the ending reveal about Benjamin, and what does it all mean? Before the story of Benjamin's life begins, the dying Daisy first tells her daughter a story about a clockmaker called Monsieur Gateau Elias Koteas , who was commissioned to build a clock for a new train station.
Gateau was left distraught when his son was killed in the First World War. When the clock was finally unveiled in , the gathered crowd were stunned to see that it was running backwards. Gateau explained that he designed it that way in the hope that time itself might start turning backwards, and that all the boys who were lost in the war might come home. There's an obvious link between the story of M.
Gateau and the story of Benjamin Button , who is born on the night that the war ends: November 11, Shortly before Benjamin reaches the end of his life, the backwards-running clock in the train station is replaced with a digital clock that runs normally, meaning that both the clock and Benjamin's lifespans are roughly the same. However, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button exists in the genre of magical realism rather than full fantasy or science fiction, and therefore Benjamin Button's condition and the clock are never explicitly said to be linked to one another.
Rather, the clock and Mr. Gateau's wish are instead a metaphor for what Benjamin's life represents: a wish for the return of youth.
